Hi Rab, I went to your blog article through a curious combination of topics even though I know I've absolutely no way to attend your program.  The story you told about The City Beneath the Waves mentioned "Scottish folklorist David Thomson" as your source.  It took a bit of prowling to find the correct David Thomson, then more to learn about his book, The People of the Sea: A Journey in Search of the Seal Legend where he tells of his search for more about the Selchie & of his own seal experiences.  Even here in the Great Lakes area of Michigan I have found many libraries own the book.  Our inland waterways are far shallower & also seal-less, but you have managed to net my own interest even if I can't bring your sea experience to telling the tales.

I also appreciated both your tale of the 99 boats in Scottish fleet wiped out in 1818 with only 1 surviving boat and your other tale of the man nearly killed on dry land by the giant freak wave.

hmmm.  Maybe I need a few selchie and other sea stories to add to my repertoire before this August's annual Highland Games (annually since 1849...a drop in the bucket of Celtic tradition, but a long time for this area.)
