Ideas--How to "meet" each other on "Professional Storyteller"

Several people have said it would be exciting to have a retreat where "Professional Storyteller" members could meet.

The good news is that there is a time and place scheduled for 2008. . .the National Storytelling Conference in Gatlinburg, TN from August 6th to August 10th (includes Youth, Educators, and Storytellers Alliance Pre-Conference).

Yes, there are people from outside the United States on this site.

Yes, there will be people attending the conference that are not part of "Professional Storyteller" yet.

However, this would be a perfect place to promote the site among our fellow storytellers.

To quickly recognize each other, we could wear a Hawaiian lei or something of that nature. The Utah Storytelling Guild uses this idea when at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. As a result, we gained a ton of people to the guild email list.

So while at the National Storytelling Conference, exchange business cards and send a message after the conference with an invite to join "Professional Storyteller".

I will be at the 2008 National Storytelling Conference. Will you?

Until we tell again,

Rachel:

I wish I could be at the NSN conference. Unfortunately (but fortunately), I will be presenting 2 sessions and performing at the International Association of School Librarians conference. I vote for "Mardi Gras Beads" as the identifier since PS was born in New Orleans. hahahaha

Love your ideas. You are such a go-getter!

Warmly,
Dianne

Or, there is the Outside In Storytelling Marketing Workshop in August in Phoenix. We got space. Come.

This proves that any event could be a type of retreat for us from "Professional Storyteller". We don't have to worry about creating a separate one.

So, Sean, does this mean you will have mardi gras beads at your Outside In Storytelling Marketing Workshop? I would love to attend your event. . .we'll see if I can go this year or another year.

Until we tell again,

We're small and intimate at the OISBC, so it will be easy for folks to get in touch. I agree, no need to create yet another shiny-fluffy event.

Aaaah I so envy everyone who is going to the conference, and the Festival, and all the events I'll miss... *sniff sniff*
Good news is, my traveling bug is alive and well, so I'll be back here in no time!
When I was in Jonesborough last year storytellers from our listserv were wearing buttons to recognize each other. It was very useful! (Well, actually Granny Sue spotted me because of my Hungarian accent, but oh well...)
I hope I'll meet all of you in person sooner or later!

Great idea, Rachel! I'll be at the conference. Do we need something everyone can bring from home or something someone will hand out at the conference?

Rachel-
Sadly, I will be missing the conference. Unless I were to go to work my fanny off (which I've done more than once) I couldn't afford it. Also, I don't think my 6 month old would enjoy it as much as I would.
Honestly I would settle for meeting any storytellers living in Nashville.

I'll be there, right after I finish the second summer session at ETSU. Maybe we should add a big PS to the bottom of our name badges so we can easily recognize each other.

Always a tale to tell,
MyLinda
