Has anyone worked with government or businesses to integrate ideas of storytelling and narrative into their styles of advertisement, presentation, interpersonal communication, or anything else?

I'm really looking for more information on this topic

Dear Alison:

You need to contact people with the Storytelling in Organizations special interest group of the National Storytelling Network.

Plus, there is a "Storytelling in Organizations" group on Facebook (no connection to the special interest group).

Finally, you will find some of those people in the "Applied Storytelling: the power of storytelling" on Professional Storyteller. Join that group, if you are not already, and send a message to all its members.

Until we tell again,

Rachel Hedman
Thank you very much.
I will check out all those groups.
Cool!
Thanks a lot. I'll check them out. Thank you so much for your help.
I've tried to integrate a sense of storytelling in some of my marketing for real estate, especially The Cotswolds that I think I have a blog about on this site. I think that government, as well as some businesses I've come acrosss in my area, have pretty much of a deaf ear for storytelling.
I'm really interested in the concepts. Narrative in business is such a catch phrase right now in a lot of places, I wonder how many businesses really know what their doing with it. I'm working on a comic book on storytelling in business and education that I hope will encourage more people to explore it. We'll see.
All the time. It is my primary source of income for my business. It's much harder than most people think. The competition is HUGE, mostly from people who have powerful marketing skills and low storytelling skills. Very frustrating at times, lol.

Our new workshop (developed after a couple of decades) is "The Ancient Secret of Public Speaking" presented once a month out here in Arizona.

We also developed a training kit. You can see that at Storytelling101.com
Hello Alison
I have been running a consultancy specialising in storytelling in business for 14 years and have a wide range of experience using story in a corporate context. Probably be a good idea for us to sit down and have a chat ...?

Hi,
I just joined here, but I am an instructor for the fedreal gov't and have incorporated storytelling into everything I teach. That's kind of why I am here, my students are encouraging me to expand beyond making their days interesting into a professional level of storytelling. Anyway, long answer short, I'm working on integrating storytelling into my agency from the inside out. I'd be glad to discuss what I've run into if you're interested.
V_Eske, Hi. All I can say is that the federal gov't has a wonderful asset, with you on board. Sounds like you are in the educational dept. Stories/parables/pictures/images/illustrations, verbal or otherwise--all stir the imagination that invites meaningful response and fosters community and loyalty. It can produce one of the greates natural resources of energy that we have---human beings... working WITH each other instead of against all the odds. I'm happy to learn of your work. Cheers!
I am fortunate to find myself in the position I am in. I started looking for a job with 2 copies of my resume, both with a penciled-in address because we had just moved. From that scary and miserable experience, I find myself 5 years older, with knowledge I never wanted, and the task of passing that knowledge along to unsuspecting new hires of the Social Security Administration.
I translate law and very technical material (the driest stuff you've ever seen!) into understandable, managable & memorable pieces every day. I honestly never thought what I was doing was different or special. I thought it was quirky and it worked for me. Since then, I've gained a sort of celeberty status. My songs, stories & other stylings are being picked up and used by other instructors in the classroom. Over 200 trainees and countless others have been influenced by it and, I'm proud to say, it sticks with them! It's so amazing to see the things I 'just do' change the face of the training program for the better.
It's hard to describe what I've done because the material is so technical, but I've made parts of it suitable for 8-14 year olds at take your child to work day. They eat it up and it sticks with them! The personal touch and a little humor go so far in making things work (just don't tell the suits that write my check that we're laughing in my classroom!) I am fortunate to have a very accecpting and understanding management team above me, and they too seem to appreciate the effort in changing our presentation style.
Very impressive V Eske! Stories that stick to the Social Security Administrative taskforce (and their kids!) WOW! I can appreciate to a small degree, the challenging task it can be to translate technical writing into friendly jargon with instructions for use... #1 rule is to assume your audience knows NOTHING except, perhaps, how to turn the page... I used to work at a geophysical software company in customer service (creating keys with UNIX and assisting clients that would call in), and also worked on writing some of the training manuals for the software (that I translated from the technical write-ups.) I actually loved the challenge because it was creative, and I love education & teaching. But what a transformation ---to NOT get lost in translation! I wish you all the best. As I said before, the field of gov't services is very blessed with your presence in their department. :-)
