Share a Story - Change the World

My life is rich with rescued animals. I volunteer in horse and dog rescue. I fall in love and have my heart broken about every second day. It's worth it.

When I was a little kid, I was often asked the inevitable little kid question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

I'd pipe, "I'm going to have lots of babies!"

This always got me a big smile and a pat on the head.

Around the age of six came disillusionment. My Baba noticed that despite this fervently maternal declaration, any doll I received was given a choppy haircut, then flung in a corner. I'd return to playing with my pets.

"What you mean, you want to have lots of baby, Raisichka?" she asked in Ukrainian.

"I'm going to marry a horse and have a bunch of foals," I replied firmly. "Palominos, Appaloosas, Arabians and everything. Then I'm going to marry a dog and have puppies."

My Baba sighed. "Sorry, Raisichka. You going to have to marry human man and have baby."

This was worse than the Santa Claus thing. Way worse. Two blows at once. Bam! Bam! I was appalled. Boys and screaming, pooping babies? Though I'd successfully taught the former to play Fetch, I had grave doubts about the latter.

I learned to luuuurve boys. But I'm fulfilling my childhood dream by being wholeheartedly involved in animal rescue. Like I said, I'm going to have babies. Lots and lots of babies. And I do.

The last thing my parents expected me to do was become a farmer. They said they wernt footing the bill for a farm. I looked in the yellow pages found a farm, got a job, married the bosses son, that was almost 33 years ago. 1000's of cows ago, dozens of horses and many many a rescue later.
