If you remember the spooky story, "The Hobyahs", which used to be in the 2d Victorian Reader, or June Barnes-Rowley, who founded the magazine "Swag of Yarns", or another Australian author/storyteller, Ellen Frances Burdett, you might find my blog today (not the one here) of interest. Storytelling + Research = LoiS
I still substitute in a nearby library when my schedule permits. Saw this in a library journal and thought some here might be interested.
21,000 novels, novellas, & short stories are in a new online database
bit.ly/2uexpPV of Australian historical newspapers & needs the public's
help reading & editing the forgotten titles. Many are uniquely Australian
& were serialized in newspapers & journals when printing was too expensive
& libraries were few.
My own thought is it might be a great source of materials & also probably Public Domain. (That last part would need some research, but promising.)
'Day all. Anyone interested in folktales, especially magic/fairy/wonder tales, collected in Australia, I know quite a few, and am definitely interested in discovering more. Drop us a line. Oh yeah! Do yous know about the Australian Fairy Tale Society's Inaugural Conference at Paddington Uniting Church, Sydney, on 9th June, 2014? Hope to see you there.
I am happily telling in Canberra, especially to children and their parents from 0-8
My resource collection has built up over the years and I happily use puppets, props and participation with the groups I am involved with
Today would have been Mabel's birthday.
I celebrate her life & friendship & mourn losing her recently. She left a legacy among those of us who had the good fortune to know her, either online, or in her beloved Australia.Fabulous news for you & also Marilyn! May your homes also be well.
A comparatively very minor house flood that happened last year was nothing to what is happening in Oz. Still it gives me an understanding of how it will disrupt lives long after the waters are gone.
LoiS(tay well & help where you can)
So it's even in New South Wales? Jane Tanner just says NSW & I've no idea where Bateman's Bay is, but that's Anna Jarrett's home.
I know Queensland normally counts on the rains flooding at least the north, but this is way beyond that & I join you in your concern for your countrymen. It's impressive & scary to see the devastation.
Hope it's a G'day wherever you are!
I see the flood waters have reached Brisbane where Marilyn & Daryll live. Everybody else is in NSW (no doubt holding your breath!) If you're currently o.k., Marilyn & Daryll, please give us a shout! Anybody else if you've been travelling in Queensland during this, let us know more about how you're doing.
In the meantime our prayers are with all involved in the flood & for Marilyn & Daryll.
