About World Storytelling Day

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated every year on the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn equinox in the southern. On World Storytelling Day, as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible, during the same day and night. Participants tell each other about their events in order to share stories and inspiration, to learn from each other and create international contacts.

How do you host an event?

Easy! Your local storytelling group, festival, committee, or even an individual storyteller, can simply plan an event for March 20th, and promote it as part of World Storytelling Day.

Theme
The theme for 2009 was "NEIGHBOURS." Do you have an idea for a theme for 2010? Join in the discussion on the WSD email list.

To subscribe to the WSD email discussion list, send a message to: storytellingday-subscribe@pytte.net.

As you plan events, you can email them to Dale Jarvis at storytelling@nf.sympatico.ca, and I'll add them as I get them.

I learned about World Storytelling Day via this network and had a great day! With two fellow storytellers I attacked several primary schools and we encountered a lot of enthusiast listeners. Next year again!

What a night last night! Twelve members of our Storytellers Guild entertained a full house at The Story Barn in Baden, Ontario (Canada). Our event was the day after WSD but that allowed two of our members to have their own dinner concerts on March 20 (see Carol Leigh Wehking's message below) and others to participate in the Hamilton, Ontario concert which was held today. A very full weekend of stories in this area! There were personal stories, original stories, stories about local neighbours and world neighbours. The audience ranged from those who had never heard storytelling before to long-time listeners. The money we raised was donated to Medecins Sans Frontieres/ Doctors without Borders.

Some of the eldest tell me...the fest was so good, when will we do another one...next year is too far..tomorrow?...
It's great, they talk between them and in the neighbourhood about the WSD. It is so great that they share their enthousiasm for storytelling.

In Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, we held two concerts in our neighbourhood cafe - both sold out. Everyone was delighted with the stories of Neighbours - some of which were true local stories from a book by a man who also came to the concert (we also told folktales and family stories). Everyone was also delighted with the food and the setting, so we will do this again! We brought greetings from all the countries that had posted so far - so that was a treat, too. Profits from our evening will help support Pamela Ateka's planned storytelling festival in Nairobi, with Community Focus Group.

Hello,
Well, here in Vevey, Switzerland, it was a great afternoon. Many children, age 3 to 14, came from the neighbourhood and took an active storytelling part in the afternoon event. Many said coming " I won't talk" and as the time went on, they did talk and tell together!
A very small little girl, Angelina, after sang a last song of her choice, came up to me and said into my ear..."I will come back here with you". She was so sweet and I was very happy. Then, after a tasty "goûter" they said to me "next year we do it again, right..."

Thanks Dale for all that great proposal.

Happy Springtime to everyone
Yours
Nathalie

In Stockholm the local storytelling network organized a full night with stories about neighbours, with ten storytellers and forty in the audience.

Stories of neighbours have been told - and it felt so good to share the special thought of stories being told everywhere on this great day!!!
Happy listeners left our group with smiles on their lips and happy hearts.
Hope the day is a sucess for everyone

Happy World Storytelling Day from a bard on the road!

Through Professional Storyteller and this particular group I met Raghnild Morch. Today we met and both performed at a local primary school in Surrey to celebrate and mark WSD! YAY for the global community of tellers. Happy telling!
