About World Storytelling Day

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated every year on the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn equinox in the southern. On World Storytelling Day, as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible, during the same day and night. Participants tell each other about their events in order to share stories and inspiration, to learn from each other and create international contacts.

How do you host an event?

Easy! Your local storytelling group, festival, committee, or even an individual storyteller, can simply plan an event for March 20th, and promote it as part of World Storytelling Day.

To subscribe to the WSD email discussion list, send a message to:

I've made a change to the World Storytelling Day website at:

Anyone who is a member of the site can add an event. If you are not a member, you can sign up on the site.

I did this because I am going to be travelling and working a lot over the next few months, so I won't be able to maintain the site as much as I have in previous years. So, the calendar is now in the hands of all of us!

Please start adding your events and good luck! If you have problems, send me an email.

MoonShadow Stories will be celebrating our 5th anniversary of continuous public storytelling performances in Singapore with a mini-storytelling marathon on World Storytelling Day Saturday 20th March 2010. Please view for details about "Stories Day & Night: A Celebration of Storytelling".
We will be the first storytellers to ever hold a storytelling marathon in Singapore! And what better day to hold in than on World Storytelling Day itself.

I am intrigued with this event. I will try to sponsor one in the local area --- near Olympia, WA. Anyone else in the neighborhood interested in being involved?

Elsinore Castle is the home of the story of Hamlet - on the harbourfront overlooking the castle lies the library. Here in the childrens departement I will be telling stories for children - on this very special day of tales all over the world. Several storytellers are planning a storytelling session for adults later in the day. Venue not yet confirmed.
Looking forward to follow the stories georgrafically as they fill the worldmap.

we're looking forward to a house concert on World Storytelling Day 2010 -- our proceeds will go to support the making of the StorySave CDs of the late Alice Kane. StorySave is a project for Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada, saving the voices of storytelling elders of special repertoire more here:

What a night last night! Twelve members of our Storytellers Guild entertained a full house at The Story Barn in Baden, Ontario (Canada). Our event was the day after WSD but that allowed two of our members to have their own dinner concerts on March 20 (see Carol Leigh Wehking's message below) and others to participate in the Hamilton, Ontario concert which was held today. A very full weekend of stories in this area! There were personal stories, original stories, stories about local neighbours and world neighbours. The audience ranged from those who had never heard storytelling before to long-time listeners. The money we raised was donated to Medecins Sans Frontieres/ Doctors without Borders.
