About World Storytelling Day

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated every year on the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn equinox in the southern. On World Storytelling Day, as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible, during the same day and night. Participants tell each other about their events in order to share stories and inspiration, to learn from each other and create international contacts.

How do you host an event?

Easy! Your local storytelling group, festival, committee, or even an individual storyteller, can simply plan an event for March 20th, and promote it as part of World Storytelling Day.

To subscribe to the WSD email discussion list, send a message to:

I've made a change to the World Storytelling Day website at:

Anyone who is a member of the site can add an event. If you are not a member, you can sign up on the site.

I did this because I am going to be travelling and working a lot over the next few months, so I won't be able to maintain the site as much as I have in previous years. So, the calendar is now in the hands of all of us!

Please start adding your events and good luck! If you have problems, send me an email.

In Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, we held two concerts in our neighbourhood cafe - both sold out. Everyone was delighted with the stories of Neighbours - some of which were true local stories from a book by a man who also came to the concert (we also told folktales and family stories). Everyone was also delighted with the food and the setting, so we will do this again! We brought greetings from all the countries that had posted so far - so that was a treat, too. Profits from our evening will help support Pamela Ateka's planned storytelling festival in Nairobi, with Community Focus Group.

In Stockholm the local storytelling network organized a full night with stories about neighbours, with ten storytellers and forty in the audience.

Stories of neighbours have been told - and it felt so good to share the special thought of stories being told everywhere on this great day!!!
Happy listeners left our group with smiles on their lips and happy hearts.

Happy World Storytelling Day from a bard on the road!

Through Professional Storyteller and this particular group I met Raghnild Morch. Today we met and both performed at a local primary school in Surrey to celebrate and mark WSD! YAY for the global community of tellers. Happy telling!

In the south of Denmark we had a wonderful WSD in a small room where more than 50 people found their way to listen to great stories about neighbours. We invited a singer/guitarplayer, whom I worked with before.

She recently moved into an old bakery at the small island, Bogø. Here she turned the bakery into a 'culture house' and arranges events in the summer. It's too cold in the winter.
So when I asked her to work with us, and I suggested we used the bakery, she said it was too cold and instead she found another room for us.
It was a great succes! The room was crowded and people really enjoyed the stories.
Besides she got a chance to present two songs she has written about the island and about moving to that small community.
AND my storytelling group were so fascinated by the the 'teamvwork' that they suggested, we go on working together.
So that was a real win-win-win-win situation!!!
Happy celbration to all of you out there in the real world!

Hello fellow storytellers

Denmark is busy finding places and events for telling great stories about neighbours .

One of the storytelling groups that I am part of - - will be performing at three different libraries on the north coast at Five o´clock on the 20th.

Warming up to the day there will be a visit to our neighbour storytellers in Landskrona, Sweden on the 10th of March.

Hopefully there will also be a morning storytelling session at an International school in the downtown area following the morning sing song.

Lots of wishes to everyone for a wonderful day and night full of the joy of sharing : )
