Profile Information

About Me:
Seventh son of a silent man. I often wonder why I am a storyteller. My main role model, my father, was almost completely silent through my childhood. Throughout my own schooling I was always the class clown, school fool, etc. Keep them laughing.

My formal introduction to storytelling as an art form came during my teacher training in the early 1980's in Dornach, Switzerland to become a Waldorf School teacher. Then all those years in the classroom practising and practising.

In 1999 I was the founding Storyteller of the Kootenay Storytelling Festival in Procter, BC., and told at that festival every year since. The last few years has seen me back in the classroom solely as storyteller and storytelling workshop leader. I've found my new calling.

Going on the road

My wife Ursula and I are embarking on a year long trip through Canada, starting in Nelson, BC. We will be documenting our trip exhaustively as we go (photos, Ursula's a pro, text, so am I, oral stories, me again) and will make a serious effort to connect with other storytellers as we go. Stay tuned. Barry Gray, Nelson.

Hello Barry,

Merci pour ce message.
heureuse to be your friend, too.
Wouah! The Pléiades are very close to where I live:-)
I live just down the forest at the top of which used to live Charlie Chaplin. They are going to transform his manoir into the Chaplin's museum shortly.
I read you were in Dornach,
there I collaborated with Mathias Ganz who is the director of the puppet theater at the Goetheanum.
Do you sometimes come in Switzerland?
to the pleasure to meet with you then.
Have a beautiful day
Nathalie

Hi Pat

I just had to look up other Canadians on this list. Our travels begin in two days. I'll send out a link to a blog I'll keep. Take care. Barry

Hi Barry:

Thanks for looking me up, interesting to see that you are involved in Proctor at the Kootenay Festival. My family and I tried to make a go of it across the lake from you in Balfour through the 90's but it wasn't our time there, I guess. So, I'm back in the north and finally connecting with you via internet, crazy!
Keep in touch and safe travels to you and yours in your adventures!

Sincerely,

Pat

The way to make new freinds is to ask. And this way of sharing helps usdo do. Welcome to international storytelling and to my friendship list.
I am hoping that you will share some ideas and information about the places you have gone and the experiences you have had.

Hello Berry,
Is Petronella van Dijk one of them. She is the director of the Sherbrook Storytellingfestival ( near Montreal). It was fun being there. Jsut a week ago I met a canedain storyteller, Bob Seven Crows, on a festival in Belgium ( www.alden-biesen.be) Great place to be.
What you have with Durch and Swiss Germain I had with French and Quibeck French. Hard to follow, although I do understand French.
Try some Dutch evey now and then and who knows?
May the Stories be with you!
Eric

Hello Barry, Yes, I am counting down the days to my birthday but there an extra bonus because in 23 days I will be retiring from 33 years as a Special Education Teacher. A teacher walked by me today and said "160 hours left till your done." And who counting. Thanks, Gary Wittmann

Hi Barry, thanks for your message. I went on your site yesterday and checked out the Kootenay Festival; it looks really cool. Are all the tellers local? And are all the stories of local (Kootenay) characters and events? Tell me more about it! Good luck on your trans-Canadian journey --- will you post some observations from the road as you go along?? Lawrence.
