* NEW Story Cabaret FOR ADULTS : 'SCHEHERAZADE'S SHED'
...as Chloë of the Midnight Storytellers...
They say every man needs a shed but where does a modern storyteller go to play with new kinds of story? Many adult audiences just don't connect with tales of kings and fairy magic, so Chloë is a 21st century Scheherazade. With a twinkle in her eye and the wisdom - or not! - of her years, Chloë presents a thrilling mix of all new spoken word repertoire. Mischief in black and white from Casablanca ... Guns + gold from East Africa ... Possibly the world's most romantic *true* ghost story, from 1900s Istanbul ... and spinetingling eco horror from a short story by Manda Scott. And more!
"A wonderful night. I was on the edge of my seat and with you in my heart" - RS, Kidderminster
"Innovative, fabulous language, hilarious" - Anna Saunders, director Cheltenham Poetry Festival
* FOR ADULTS: British heritage : 'LOST LEGENDS OF BRITAIN'
...as Chloë of the Midnight Storytellers...
Romance and laughter, from King Arthur to wild Welsh magic, exquisite love tragedy in the Scottish Western Isles and the awesome Rollright Stones. These little known gems of British folklore will send a tingle down your spine and put a twinkle in your eye.
** Can perform partially in French and/or German; clear English diction ideal for audiences listening in a 2nd language
Drat - the cough is back! A mild British winter has incubated the most atrocious bugs. After several days of coughing + nosebleeds, oh yeah this one's a doozy, this afternoon I'm scheduled to entertain kiddies at a new After School Storytelling spot. I'm sure many of you have had similar experiences!
Mind over matter has always worked for me and I'm concentrating on being well for Friday 29 January at Riverhouse Arts Centre , Walton on Thames (near London) where I'm performing my most popular set Tales of Lust & Chocolate.
For UK National Storytelling Week, I'm delighted to have been given a guest spot at Cheltenham Poetry Festival's regular open mic night Well Versed,4 February 7pm at Smokey Joe's coffee bar, Cheltenham, England.
In England where performance storytelling has very little chance to shine - the organiser of a cool London spoken word night recently told me to "stick to schools and libraries" - it's good to get out there.
3 more performances of Scheherazade's Shed at Stroud Theatre Festival (England). Phew!! - considering I had half a voice + desperate cough on the first night, we can call this a success. Tested a lot of new material: audiences giggled and gasped in all the right places. Even the Moon Landing story held them. Good - this is what I was after doing!
- Plus grateful thanks to Central School of Speech & Drama, London, all those years ago: because that training enabled me to be clear and expressive when I really didn't have enough breath to speak at all!
Next stop Windsor Fringe Festival. Hmm... Fuchsia pink jeans or gold silk?!
2015 is my 15th year as a pro storyteller. What a blast! From being the world's first ever Dragon Whisperer in Residence at gorgeous Sudeley Castle (near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire www.sudeleycastle.co.uk ) to exciting experiments with new repertoire in my contemporary spoken word show Scheherazade's Shed (next at www.windsorfringe.co.uk 24 Sept) - this is the work I always wanted to do. Wow!
Plus little delights: yesterday morning as I got ready to go and tell Dragon Tales, my favourite Saturday morning show on BBC Radio 4 invited listeners to tell them about dressing up - so I sent them the photo of Agent Green in all her DreamWing jacket splendour, and they rang me for a chat live on air. That's national radio, and I was talking to one of my favourite 'voices'! Frabjous chortles :)
- And that contemporary story show is FLYING. After an anxious (for me) but warmly received debut at Cheltenham Poetry Festival early this year, Friday night at Kidderminster Arts Fest in the gothic gorgeousness of a Unitarian Church Hall was truly sparkling. Some of the more senior audience were fairly startled in places but they all listened like limpets. Job, as they say, done. This is the development phase of Scheherazade's Shed: with some backing, I plan to anchor the piece in almost futuristic mode - and then tour. WATCH THIS SPACE. x
...And the outdoor thing features a team of scary 'tellers you'll meet on a short walk round Bristol's Castle Park + Cornmarket. Please wrap up warm!
Friday 21 Feb 8pm (Meet guides at 7.30pm) TALES IN THE DARK - Meet at Café Revival BS1 1JG then follow guides to hear spooky yarns + horror stories, probably rated 15 - 18 at the cinema (not kiddy stuff!) - £10 (£8) + booking fee, in advance only. LImited places. (Wheelchair access: ok on paths but café seating/toilets not accessible; there is a sheltered area for waiting) Bristol Storyfest TALES IN THE DARK
Ready for next week's Bristol Storyfest - altho' I'm slightly anxious about driving 50 miles in storm force winds, never mind telling *outdoors* in gale/blizzard. Right now anything is possible in England! (Just grateful not to be on the coast, battered by 100ft high waves...)
Thursday 20 Feb 8pm STORY SLAM Lansdown pub, Clifton BS8 1AF - Doors open 7.15pm, be early for good seat - £5 (£3) on the door only 10 polished prosologists compete for kudos + possibly a well earned pint. And our handsome host is rumoured to be addicted to alliteration... I sense a theme here Bristol Storyfest Story Slam
