- About Me:
- Four time Grammy award winner David Holt has lived a life of adventure. In 1968, David started his journey in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. With a passion to become an old-time banjo player, David traveled to remote mountain communities like Kingdom Come, KY and Sodom, NC searching for the best traditional musicians and storytellers. Holt found hundreds of old-time mountaineers with a wealth of folk music and stories. There was 100 year old banjoist Wade Mainer, ballad singer Dellie Norton from Sodom, NC, legendary guitarist Doc Watson, and 122 year-old washboard player Susie Brunson and Grand Ole Opry star Roy Acuff. Holt learned to play not only banjos, but many unusual instruments like the mouth bow, the bottleneck slide guitar and even the paper bag and in the process his life became a story.
For over three decades, David’s passion for traditional music and stories has fueled a successful performing and recording career. He has hosted numerous television show including PBS Folkways and Great Scenic Railway Journeys and has performed and recorded with many of his mentors including Doc Watson, Chet Atkins, Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff and Grandpa Jones. He can be heard each week on public radio’s Riverwalk Jazz and seen in the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. His recording “Live & Kickin’ at the National Storytelling Festival” was a Grammy nominee last year. In 2002 David won two Grammys for the three CD Legacy with Doc Watson. He lives in Asheville, NC.

I read that you've been to Kingdom Come. Well, you were in my neck of the woods. In fact, I just recently released two cds entitled "Kingdom Come and Back Again" and "This Side of Kingdom Come." Small world...

I've never met you but I was excited to find you on here because I recently had to write a paper on you for a college class. Hahaha - Don't worry it was an interesting paper. I got an A. Because of the paper, I got to listen to one of your audio recordings and very much enjoyed it!
Spring and fall seem to be the busy times for me. As I mentioned to Daniel, I am trying to fly less and drive more. So, even though it is hectic (check davidholt.com for the schedule!) it seems more relaxed and less hassle. Hope to see you this spring. David
