Profile Information

About Me:
i've been a storyteller since 2000 and have featured at all the major storytelling festivals in England. I have won awards, for my work running storymaking workshops with schoolchildren, and in 2007 i was appointed solo comission holder (adult) by Festival At The Edge, for whom i created a new retelling of the Irish myth "Deirdre Of The Sorrows". I work in schools, and am storyteller in residence for Chelsea Children's Hospital Schools, as well as telling to adults in clubs, festivals, arts centres etc. This summer, to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease Societies, I and my friend and colleague Peter Chand are walking Britains oldest road (literally Stone Age, and still walkable!). We shall pre-publicise our route so public can join us, hear stories and make donations. and we're trying to cross 100km of modern England with stories in our heads and no money in our pockets, throwing ourselves on the mercy of the public and relying on the power of the stories to survive!

And why did I become a storyteller? 10 years ago i went suddenly blind, meaning I couldn't read books anymore. So I reshaped my life through storytelling, and later trained as a Voice Teacher - my lifelong love of language shifting in focus from the literary to the oral. and I've never been happier or more fulfilled than I am now!

Riddle

I am the tense, silent soldiers
Crouched in the belly of the horse.
I am the arc of a falling arrow.
I am the moment the pendulum turns.
Where I live is neither here nor there
And when is long ago, and always now.
I am a donkey smuggled under straw.
I am Proteus, Old Man of the Sea,
Assuming new shapes the tighter you grip.
I am a lie that means the truth –
What am I?

A reason to tell an old story... How interesting! I never look for reasons; I work completely by instinct. If I like it, I tell it - simple as that. I suppose I choose stories that resonate at an entirely personal level and believe that human emotions don't change, no matter how many centuries have passed. I just like the idea of taking an old story - something that would have captivated medieval audiences - and making it shimmer anew for modern listeners. Yes, the stories I have mentioned are classified as medieval romances. Cat x

Hi Giles

Yes - I know exactly what you mean by a broad range of emotions. I've just re-read Aucassin & Nicolette and it was charming but too young for us. They are little more than teenagers. I'll keep looking and get back to you. 'Milun' is an exact title. It's by Marie de France. Cat x

There's Aucassin and Nicolette... The lovely Milun from the lais of Marie de France, where the lovers correspond for twenty years via a swan with messages tied to its legs... I'm open to suggestions, Giles. I'd be looking for something quite meaty, preferably with a touch of magic (this is why I'm so fond of Marie) Parzival has some good male-female encounters... I think I need to do a bit of re-reading! I'll ask Ben for suggestions too - I've managed to persuade him to join this site. Cat x

Hello Giles

I am so pleased to be your friend - and even more pleased that I didn't have to do the asking! Such a gent.

D'you think you'd consider a collaboration one day? I'd love to do a romance - maybe a medieval one. We're both very lyrical. It might be interesting. Cat x

Hello Giles

I was storytelling at Buddhafield Festival, which was equally beautiful, but contained a few more people saying "you do what?" "you're a what?".
I hope you are well.

Ah, thanks for sharing that bit of your story. Right on for seizing the opportunity in that harsh challenge. You have made some seriously good lemonade out of dem lemons! And that "cosmic supply company" is online 24/7 for those like you who understand what Samuel Goldwyn said "The harder I work, the luckier I get." We will follow your walk and send some material support when you are set up.

Congratulations to your wife on her show. Where is your wife showing in London? - I had a group show at the Mall Galleries and a one woman show at the "Everyman Gallery" back in the 80s when I was a visual artist. We love London and would visit more if we had more of the do-re-mi.
ciao for now,
Norah
