Profile Information

About Me:
Harlynne Geisler has been a professional freelance storyteller since 1980 and has told and taught storytelling in festivals, conferences, schools, colleges, libraries, churches, temples, community centers, preschools, and museums. She has performed from Aurora, New York, to Austin, Texas, to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Alberta, Canada, to Anaheim, California...and that's just the A list! She lives in San Diego and performs frequently all over southern California. She is listed in Who's Who in Entertainment.

Harlynne Geisler has taught storytelling and creative writing to clowns, magicians, teachers, children, college students, parents, puppeteers, librarians, seniors, and storytellers in New York, Texas, Illinois, Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri, Canada, Washington, Idaho, and California. She was the resident storyteller for the San Diego Museum of Art and is currently the resident storyteller for the Timken Art Museum.

Ms. Geisler was the editor of the Story Bag; A Storytelling Newsletter from 1981-2006. Her book, Storytelling Professionally; The Nuts and Bolts of a Working Performer [Libraries Unlimited Press], was published in 1997. She is an author who recently had a story published in the book More Ready-to-Tell Tales from Around the World. She was a columnist for Laugh Makers Magazine for ten years.

Her philosophy about storytelling can be summed up in one sentence from Bruno Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment; The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales: "Without fantasy to give us hope we do not have the strength to meet the adversities of life." She wants to provide fantasy and hope to all her listeners--especially the children.

She belongs to the National Storytelling Network and founded the Storytellers of San Diego in 1981.

Ms. Geisler mainly performs in southern California and occasionally in Illinois these days.

Pronounce her name Har-lin Guy-slur.

Hi Harlynne,

I am staggered by your bio. I hope to hear you tell one day. Who did the caricature on your website? That's a great idea.

Kind regards,
Reisa

Hi Harlynne, you won't see the $/£ exchange rate better or as good as this for a very long time - it's not been more in your favour since 1985, unlike this summer when it was hugely in our favour. Travel to England now!

Indeed! Hope you are well. : )

I'm planning a trip east to see the fall color.

The Champaign, IL Guild and the Tale Spinners from Bloomington/Normal have thought about trying to get together for a nice program in central, IL. If we added the Peoria tellers - we could have a good group. Should that ever happen - we could send you an invitation. Then you could write off your trip home as a business expense. Best regards, Mike Lockett

RV actually. No, nothing stolen. We were stuck on the side of the road (brakes seized up) when we got side swiped. Mangled the driver's mirror and broke the window over the couch (and our son who was sitting there). We are all fine. And the cops caught the guy that did it. Just stuck with the fun of vehicle repairs, cleaning up the mess and getting windows and mirrors replaced.
Note to drivers: Pull over when a disabled vehicle is on the shoulder. If you can't pull over, slow down! Do not reach down for a cigarette.
We got lucky this time! Hope your summer is running smoothly.

Thanks for the friend request. Apologies for getting back to you so late. Been a crazy window-breaking, vehicle-problem, rushing-to-get-to-shows kind of week.
Hope you have something fun planned for the Fourth!

What fun to connect with you! I read your "storybag" back in the early days...what was that...150 years ago or so, who's counting? Blessings,
MaryAnn

Hello, Harlynne, Mike Lockett here from Normal, IL... I saw on another site that you have a storytelling book out. Please share the title with me and a blurb about it. Also - when will you be in Illinois again and where?

You did a lot of good for folks with your storybag for a long time. Just thought I'd let you know that.

Sincerely, Mike Lockett (The guy from Normal, IL who calls himself The Normal Storyteller)
