Sharing from a vast storehouse of knowledge and firsthand experiences, Hawk’s stories and songs dynamically bring the wonders and wisdom of ancient cultures to life. Many of his tales incorporate unique musical instruments, such as the Native American flute, the udu drum from West Africa, and the bullroarer from Australia. Inspiring, fun, and highly educational, audience participation is a spontaneous and integral part of each show. Hawk personally crafts many of the Native American-style flutes, drums, and rattles used during his performances.
Hawk has offered his lively performances, residencies, and workshops for nearly two decades all across the country, as well as having performed in the country of South Africa. Additionally, he has served as an associate professor at Appalachian State University, offering courses in “Personal Mythology and the Oral Tradition”. A six time recording artist, his first children’s book, The Story of the First Flute, was released in 2002, by Parkway Publishers.
Hawk has served as the Director for the ‘07 and ‘08 Stories for Life Festival. He is a long-standing member of the North Carolina Storytelling Guild and the South Carolina Artist Roster. He is currently the President of the South Carolina Storytelling Network. He was a featured teller at both the 2005 and 2006, SC and NC State Storytelling Festivals, 2006 NC Storyfest, and the 2003-2006 Piccolo Spoleto and MOJA Festivals.
Hawk's Philosophy of Storytelling
“I seek to share tales that offer historical and scientific tidbits that encourage people to learn about the ancient cultures that predate modern civilization as we know it - stories which offer a vision of environmental respect and tolerance for cultural differences.”
I heard this year's Stories for Life at Picolo spoleto was well-attended and and received - kudos to you and Linda!
Just wondering how the combined workshop with Kendall Havens and Stories for Life certification was coming along.
I am in the middle of booking gigs through the end of '08 and came across the notification for the mid-October workshop. Is it still planned for the dates (10/17-18)? What will fee be for attendance? Is there a registration form yet?
Please pardon me if i have missed any previous announcements in the SCSN newsletter. I have been verybusy beefing up my schedule since learning recently that I am not dying from liver disease (praise Great Spirit!).
Hi Hawk! I'm excited because I am coming to spend the summer in Charleston SC. I hope you will share with me what is going on in the storytelling world so I can participate as much as possible. It looks like you do amazing stuff!
Thanks, Holly
Good to see you here, bro. Are you guys set Stories for Life/Piccolo Spoleto Festival? Looks like you have some heavy hitters on board. ;>0
My health is steadily improving and hope to get rolling strong on the path again soon. Fender -bender interfered with Patchwork, but will be at Catawba Cnty/Murray Mills in May.
Excited to read in newsletter about possible Kendall Haven/Stories for Life event next fall. Please keep me posted on that.
