Profile Information

My Profile Information Disappeared!

I tell Stories from Around the World and Back Through Time.

  • My large supply of stories permits programs on most topics. Stories may use sign language, music, puppets or dance with programs for all age levels.  Among my reenacting is a woman who grew up on an Underground Railroad station, family Civil War activity, and was a farmer's widow -- other historical aspects covered: pioneer MI, the War of 1812, schools, life 100 yrs. ago, Victorian times and the 1950s. My storytelling supports reading in many ways as well as tailoring it to fit thematic programs. I also teach basic American Sign Language & "baby sign" as well as telling in voice and sign.
  • While most of my storytelling has been in Michigan, I have told in other states, the territory of Puerto Rico, plus Canada, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and St. Kitts.
  • Starting in 1970, I have roughly 40 years of storytelling experience. Until the autumn of 2006, this was combined with librarianship when I was accepted into the MI performing arts touring directory. I left Mount Clemens Public Library (where I was in charge of Children's Services) for full-time storytelling. My current listing with MI Arts & Humanities Directory was renewed & runs through 2015.
  • Because my storytelling frequently requires research, my blog Storytelling + Research = LoiS covers a wide variety of topics & shares some of my work to help others know more.
  • My website hosts Michigan Storytelling.Org as I have a passion for supporting storytelling, which includes storytelling organizations. I founded Mt.C. Raconteurs & North Oakland County Storytellers, serving their 1st 2 yrs. as president.  It also led me to the joy of serving as an Assistant Administrator here.

There's much more, but this gives an overview.

History as seen by the 'average' person

At the risk of "shameless self-promotion", my Jan. blog at <http://www.StorytellingResearchLoiS.com> about "History as seen by the 'average' person" is an idea that might appeal to some of us as we have two related groups, The Civil War and also By the…

Great Resources for Freelance Storytellers

Heads Up if you are telling as a freelance storyteller!

I'm a member of Freelancers Union & definitely recommend it for a variety of reasons (continuing ed., insurance, & other resources).  They currently have a Twitter discussion about independent workers not getting paid – how to avoid getting stiffed by clients, what to do if it happens to you, and how we can work together to protect each other.  Did you know…

Puppets Beyond Professional Storyteller

I just posted on my other blog at Storytelling + Research = LoiS "Let Puppets Tell Your Story."  It's part of a workshop I'll do at the end of the month for my local puppeteers guild's Day of Puppetry.  That blog post & some of the information on my website, http://www.LoiS-sez.com ,  may interest folks here as it's definitely puppetry from the storyteller's… Continue

Looking Beyond

There's a need for social networking among the storytelling family beyond here. My own state of Michigan has seen paid opportunities for storytelling, its storytelling groups, & even our state's population decline. While a Group could easily be started here (international groups are very active here), not everyone loving storytelling in Michigan feels comfortable on a network aimed at the "Professional Storyteller" even though this network welcomes beginners to storytelling. For that reason… Continue

Thanks Lois....this whole writing thing started from a local Memoir Writing class given by the local Adult Ed. program. Never thought it would go this far but I find myself writing quite a bit and even selling some stories. Latest is a book, written with a class-mate, called Desert Journeys. I am a big fan of the southwest deserts, Ever read Jack Ruby's Kitchen Sink?

Hi Lois, and thanks for your warm welcome. I must confess I don't exactly know what we are expected to post in the group. Stories, legends, other? You also said that it could also help locate contacts as I travel. I'll be going back to Belgium next saturday. What I am supposed to do then? Sorry for these "silly" questions, but I'd very much like to get involved as much as I can (which might not be enough, but...), and I sincerely don't know where to start. Have a nice WE.

Thank you for the welcome, Lois. I first got turned on to storytelling in business based on the work of Milton Erickson, who was the model for NLP. I've been using the method for 32 years, and I can always tell that people get far more from my stories than they do from straight lecture. I'll check out the Stories for Business group. Warm regards, Jim

Thanks LOis,
you are right,I am a english translator,I obtained my bachelor’s degree in translation. I am currently a MA student in Teaching English as a Foreign languages. In a festival called ''Mothers as a storyteller''I obtained the first grade.I try to connect my education with telling story, because I am interested in both of them.I think someone as an storyteller needs to be beside of an english teacher. He can use his art in improving learning english. In most of the classes teachers plays the role of storyteller but it is not correct.because most of them don't know any things about the techniques of telling story,in addition the purpose of the telling story by teacher is teaching but the purpose of telling story by story teller is enjoying.Through telling story by storyteller, learnrs learn indirectly and this is the art of storyteller.
his art in improving learning english.
