I have told stories for over twenty years. Much of my work is done under the name of Captain of the West, since I am based almost as far west down the boot of Cornwall as you can get, surrounded by moorland, standing stones and barrows, myth and magic, with the sea 4 miles away in 3 directions.
I have a degree in English from Oxford University, including literature and language from Anglo Saxon times onward,so though I draw on the Cornish tales of my home, I also love medieval and historical tales, sometimes working in period language, style and costume for clients such as the National Trust.
Since I taught performance and theatre skills for 20 years, I have a particular interest in using voice to create atmosphere and character.
I work with all audiences: man, woman, child, grandparent, bar leaner, school, academic, the haunted and the celebrant. Though I am particularly fond of traditional Celtic, English and British folklore such as lies just beneath the turf of my home - the drolls and tales of Old Cornwall, the Lays of Arthur etc., I find myself becoming more eclectic all the time, drawing on all cultures and all periods - and increasingly including very recent and personal stories. I compose tales too.
I retrained with the National Trust in Environmental Conservation, so also use storytelling as a way of conveying all kinds of facts and processes in an accessible way: facts scientific, historic, arcane...
Most of all though, I love to see the light of a story in the eyes of an audience, knowing that some of those sparks may live on to kindle again!
