I've been a primary school teacher for 13 years, and always liked to tell my pupils stories, particularly fairy tales.
Since August 2008 I'm self-employed and promoting story telling as an educational tool in schools and pre-schools. I've started performing for children in October and I plan to give workshops for teachers to improve their story telling skills.
Hi Katie,
I've only just joined this group and I'm probably too late with my reply.
When I read your question I immediately had to think of the story below, which I learned from a fellow storyteller at a training, who on his turn has heard it tol...
This is a place where storytellers can share their favorite tellable versions of public domain stories. You may include notes, sources, telling tips, and interesting anecdotes about the story. Happy Tales to You!
I learned about World Storytelling Day via this network and had a great day! With two fellow storytellers I attacked several primary schools and we encountered a lot of enthusiast listeners. Next year again!
With two fellow storytellers I attacked primary schools and we were interviewed and filmed by the local newspaper. I'm the one with the black hat - and sorry, in Dutch of course ;-)
This past May I performed at the Orlando Fringe Festival. One great benefit--a really fine professional photographer took pictures. My file picture (posted here) was taken at the NJ Storytelling Festival from another professional photographer. I use to run when I saw a camera, now I just keep telling and smile when I have a decent picture. Rivka
Hi Melanie, Thanks for contacting me! Yes, it sounds as though we do have much in common. I am not a formally trained teacher, but have been involved as a childcarer, nanny, 'assistant teacher reliever' (in quotes, as my title had to indicate I wasn't qualified), teamleader at a parent run early childhood centre, parent helper at my children's school, and so on... Keep in touch, Melanie, as we both set out on this wonderful storytelling journey!

Hello Melanie, I was also a primary school teacher for many years and loved using storytelling in my classroom. I see you have just started your own business. I would be very interested in hearing how you get on. Emma
Welcome to Professional Storyteller. I am thrilled that you made the jump into full-time professional storytellling. It's a challenge but well worth it. I think you will get a lot out of this online community of tellers from around the world. I am an author, storyteller, professional development consultant, and literacy advocate. I love telling to children as well as training educators and librarians in various methods of storytelling, connecting across the curriculum. You are in for a marvelous adventure. Enjoy the site and congratulations!
Warmly,
