I am at home when I am telling stories. It's not that I don't get nervous beforehand, but if I do, it evaporates when I get up and get into a tale. It's not that I don't travel, but the sense of coming home is strong anywhere I'm telling. Lucky me, I've been getting away with telling stories for 25 years now. Oh such stories! From frothy silliness to medieval tragedy from two hours to two minutes, a strong woman's story, a tale of magic, or everyday courage. Irish inventiveness, Japanese poignancy, Canadian recollections - so many tales, so little time!
Hi Melanie, thanks for dropping me a line. And huge apologies for taking so long to get back to you. I've been telling stories since i was a child but only in the last month, at the tender 'should know better' age of 42, had my first theatrical expereince. So i"ve ben busy, writing, rehearsing, publicising and finally performing in my first play 'The Bloody Tale of Little Red and Wolfie'. I contacted you simply out of curiosity. I've been earning a living professinaly as a storyteller for the last three years or so, but have only realised that there are so many other storytellers out there - who i'd like to say hello to and swap experiences. As for myself my speciality is folktales (in which i also include urban legends) but i also adapt works from literature and knowledged gleaned from my three years studing mediaval Europe in the National Univeristy of Ireland, Galway. At the moment the thing i need to know most - is how to get rid of all the aches and pains my body is suffering after nine performances of my play? Any tips?
Hi Melanie,
I have moved and am living in a dulpex with my partner, Jon. His best friend and partner are living in the other half, so we share a back deck. It is a very nice place and I am quite happy.
I hear what you are saying about Arts cutbacks. Ruth and I attended a NASO Conference in November and all the arts are feeling the crunch. It's frustrating when people don't realize how investing in the arts creates enormous returns for provincial coffers and society as a whole.
Had lunch with Linda Winham and Kira Van Deusen today. Kira is in town to do a performance of her Inuit tale on Friday night and Sunday. Kevin Mackenzie is in town briefly on Saturday night but I will miss him as I am having a Skype meeting with SC/CC executive and then doing a reading at the Writers Federation. Ah, if only I could clone myself!....actually that is possible scientifically speaking...but you know what I mean...
True enough Melanie, and thanks for the support. Just got the contract for the new book in the mail today -- so I guess it is a reality. Enjoy the rain, we have sunshine and warm weather today.
Things are great here -- everyone is still healthy and busy so that is good. Just sold a new book on urban legends -- or, sold the idea, so now I am busy researching again but that is one of the things I love to do. Hope all is well in your part of the world. I do come west -- but not as far as Vancouver since my daughter moved to Mission!
Glad to be your first friend. As a friend you have the ability to have personal conversations with your friends rather than just posting to the large membership. There is a lot to discover here and while I admit that I haven't been very active lately, I certainly do lurk on various discussions.
Great to see you in Victoria-- hope to see you in St. Johns!
