Him folks - I just read Cathryn's note about telling stories at a teahouse. It is one of the greatest experiences a teller can have. It is so very hard to tell through an interpreter - to establish and keep up a rhythmn where the story can flow with…

Profile Information

About Me:
I am known as a teller of traditional tales in a non-traditional manner. My greatest love is listening to and telling old folktales, adding dialects and sound effects when it fits with the audience and the story. I laughingly call myself The Normal storyteller as I live in Normal, Illinois. When people would see me they would often point and snap their fingers - as if that would help them remember. "You.. you're that storyteller! That NORMAL storyteller!" Although... Is there really such a thing as a Normal Storyteller?

I am a 33-year veteran educator. (21 years as a classroom teacher and 12 as a school administrator. I have given of programs in schools and at conference, but I was the great UNKNOWN of the storytelling world until my retirement. At LANES Sharing the Fire conference, one individual asked, "Where in the world did you come from? A year ago you were not in the storytelling world, and now I see your name all over the web." (I guess it helps to have a son as your webmaster...) My answer was that I just retired from education and decided to get a real life - the life as a professional storyteller.

I want to rub elbows with my heroes - the other storytellers of this world. I want to learn from all of you - and when possible share a tale in return. My goal is to help preserve stories and pass them on to the next generation through my performances, recordings, my writings, workshops and through interactions with all of you in this wonderful world of storytelling.

Please introduce yourselves to me if we don't already know each other.

Then please re-introduce yourself to me if we do already know each other! I am often in a state of awe at storytelling get-togethers and lost in my own world of happiness after hearing a good tale. So as an old guy, I need a reminder... "Oh, we met at.... Do you remember....?" I hope we continue to become better friends and professional colleagues.

Best to all,

Mike Lockett, The Normal Storyteller

New Releases for The Normal Storyteller

Hello storytelling friends,

I wanted to share the release of two brand new storytelling products. Last week I released a new book called The Basics of Storytelling. That is the good news. The bad news is that it is only available in Taiwan and in Chinese. So - those of us who read only English can only enjoy the pictures and guess at the content. (well - I DO know the content and have it stored on my trusty computer. I will now be seeking a publisher to put out the book in English.) If the titl… Continue

Oh my goodness, some of "us" do have a rough life!!! I know, I know, it's a rough life, but somebody's got to live it! Seriously, I'm glad to hear that you had a nice vacation while the rest of us poor souls are trying to stay warm in this frozen tundra!! I'm glad that arm is moving as it should - take care of it and take care of you! - Pam

Hey Mike:

How's that shoulder? It should be about good as new by now. We've had snow today. It sure is pretty on the mountain tops.

Take care,
Pam

Thanks for the welcome, Mike. And I'm very glad you've enjoyed my Storytelling Resources website - it's been a labour of love.

I've always felt that although people often get worried when they feel they're not normal, in fact very few people indeed are actually 'normal'. But now I know why - hardly any of them come from your neck of Illinois!

Hello,
I am a teacher in China, I teach french. I find it very nice too to get connected with people all around the world and when you travel the map of possibilities widens.
I don't speak chinese either, except for the necessary situations. Xi Feng means West Wind and is a shortening of Si Di Fe Ni (Stéphanie)

Thanks a lot for your comment. I have never been yet in Taiwan, as I am quite far away, in Sichuan. They have a funny accent there.

I don't tell much stories, I have a project with children but as for adults, they don't seem quite interested. Here they call me Xi Feng :-) But in Kenya my name was Rain.

Hey Mike:

I hear you're recovering from rotator cuff surgery. Been there- done that. I had a torn right cuff a couple of years ago. My shoulder aches for you! Physical therapy worked wonders for me. My best to you - I'll pray for a speedy recovery.

"Running with the Big Dogs?" I'd say you're leading the pack!!!

I'm so glad we had the chance to finally meet face-to-face at Jonesboro. And what a treat to meet your father too! It's easy to see that that apple didn't fall far from the tree!

I actually have two CDs on the market now. I would be delighted to swap CDs with you. Buck Creacy was my producer and he's the best. I sure couldn't have done all this without his constant help and guidence.

Take care,
Pam
