The Storyteller's Story

At the conclusion of the school's activities celebrating oral culture, we sat in the staffroom enjoying the elation a successful day of creativity elicits. A teacher sat beside me and told me she had read the story of The Mermaid of Zennor eight times that day, once for each of the groups who visited her. A tale from her own cultural tradition and home country, it brought her great joy to be able to share it with the International school community. She confided in me that even though she… Continue

Sex and Death on a Walk

Photo: A lone Wattle Bird in the Grevillea

‘...when we finally know we are dying, and all other sentient beings are dying with us, we start to have a burning, almost heartbreaking sense of the fragility and preciousness of each moment and each being, and from this can grow a deep, clear, limitlesContinue

Goanna Rap and how the black snake became poisonous

Picture of Lace Monitor at Shelley Beach, taken by Roman

Goannas are monitor lizards, so named by Europeans, who, first seeing them in Australia, thought they were like the South American iguanas, hence ‘goanna’ is derived from ‘iguana’. The Aboriginal people, depending on their language group have many… Continue

I'm an ape, I brachiate...hahahhaha. I'm singing this out loud. So funny and clever. They sell baby gibbons in the markets? Eeeek. I shouldn't be surprised.

Very clever promo vid, Morgan. It shows your versatility and the audience response, as well. You have quite a voice, yourself.

I just saw a fascinating movie, Amazing Grace. It's about William Wilberforce, the English politician who worked 26 years to pass the bill which abolished the slave trade. Get this: he also founded the SPCA. All through the movie, there are asides about his sometimes eccentric kindnesses to animals. I found it interesting re: how he felt animal protection was intimately connected to human dignity and freedom. His own and others'. I feel the same way. We can't be fully ourselves while others suffer.

John Newton was Wilberforce's mentor. He was the former slaver who wrote Amazing Grace. He says, "One day I realized we were the apes, and our 'cargo' were the humans."

I'm so glad to be connected to you. Your audiences will remember your songs and stories. Some will act on them.

Thanks for the VW quote. I needed that!
