About Me:
They say storytellers are Keepers of the Culture. I prefer to call myself a Keeper of the Heart. I've been performing the spoken word on stage nationally and locally for over 15 years. I conduct workshops and give presentations on embracing change and challenges for empowered living. I perform folklore and original stories in movement-dance and song, creating an atmosphere of playful wisdom which in turn stimulates imagination, literary skills, and logic. My historical portrayal of civil rights activist and educator Mary Mcleod Bethune puts youth in touch with an African American woman born in the late 1800's ,who believed anything is possible as she manifested her dream to build a school which stands today as the Bethune-Cookman College.

I peform professionally in schools, business gatherings, festivals, and theater. I appear in the May 2000 issue of Parenting Magazine, in May 2000 issue of the International Guardian Houston, TX., the April 2006 Albuquerque Arts Magazine and other publications. I conducted a post-concert workshop with the a capella group, Sweet Honey in the Rock, for Houston's St. James School. In addition I've performed at the Whitehouse for the annual "Easter at the Whitehouse" event.

My focus is transition and transformation. Recently, I performed my "sort -of" one-woman show Maternal Dreamer, an experimental storytelling theater piece dedicated to women/mothers who are taking change to heart. Life is a journey and it's an honor to share it with others.

I'm also the 4th Sunday Host and DJ for "The Spoken Word Hour" on KUNM 89.9 FM, KUNM.org on live webstream. Listen to an array of Stories. Storytellers, Slam Poets, Albuquerque Actors and Interviewees share life stories, ambitions and concerns every Sunday night at 8pm.

I love children and I love my family. Relationships are metaphorical entities in this journey called life. One deep breath and a moment of silence has given me stories and tools for traveling. In 1989 I was a huge round mama carrying my first born. It was then I was compelled to share the gift of story that came from my parents when I was a child. It's a sharing experience of laughter, tears, gratitude, and awe.

The road trip on the storytellers path has been exhilarating and often times profound. I am sincerely grateful for all who've entrusted me to tell their stories...who've entrusted me to listen to their vulnerabilities. Folklore continues to teach me something about my circumstances and what life is ... who people are.

MATERNAL DREAMER Post: Soldier Mom

In the performance of Maternal Dreamer I share the story of a mother who grieved because the dreams she had for her son were now squelched due to his participation to serve his country in World War II. His new wife with child - under stressful circumstances beyond the war- in her grief and fear, that he will never return, experiences psychosis and is later diagnosed with schizophrenia.

In the original performance of Maternal Dreamer my friend Pamela Sparks urges me to go to an interview and det… Continue

Hey Ramona
I would be delighted to stay in touch. I am a firm believer in the phrase "A rising tide lifts all boats", we must all help each other , no? Good luck with the one woman show. I bet that was some process unearthing all those tales! Yes please lets stay in touch. Let me know how it goes.

Hey Ramona, it would appear I cannot write to you here. Ok first thing is check out www.worldpulse.com It is an international website for women, it would have possible connections for you with your desire to work in South Africa.
Secondly I would say the next step would be to contact a humanitarian group that have done work there already...such as Clowns without Borders, or other performers that have worked in South Africa and might have contacts they would be willing to share with you.
Other than that, what about goig through an NGO with UN funding? As in NGO helps you, UN funds you?
These are my thoughts, hope it is useful

Hey, Ramona,

Great to hear from you! I can't get Ning to work well for me (is Ning not Mac-friendly?), so I can't find the comment you left for me. But I'm glad you sent it!

Hi Ramona,
Thanks for your message. Yes I am a Quaker - there are actually many Quaker artists out there - and, yes, the CD didn't play - I kept meaning to try it in different players but never got to it......thanks for following up on that.
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

Hey Ramona, thanks for the kind words - I am having more fun than a guy has a right to. Will be telling Tall Tales tonight and hero tales tomorrow in PA. If there is a better occupation than storytelling I don't want to hear about it.

got a full tank of gas and ready to go,

Yea!!!!

I've SOOOOO wanted to find you again, but for the life of me I couldn't recall your name. I'm a face-seeing kinda person, and (almost) instantly recognized your exuberant face on this site.

How are things? You opted out of the WAA experience I guess? Me too. Apparently so did a host of others, finding much more success elsewhere. Gotta say, your lively performance that showcase night made a sharp impression. Do you have any recordings made? We just launched a new storytelling site, and I tried to track you down to invite you to join. It's TheStoryChest.com. If you're interested and like what you see, you can join by going to TheStoryChest.net.

Looking forward to catching up with you!!!!

Hi Ramona,

By chance did you attend the Western Arts Alliance conference in Albuquerque a few years back?

Cheers,
