When something can't be heard...maybe it's too complicated, or too difficult, or too painful, or too dull...there is a key, a key that will unlock the mind and the heart. The key is the spoken word story. And once the story is told, the truths within the story will be remembered in the heart and the mind.

Stories heal, stories teach. Stories make us laugh, and sigh, and shiver and weep. The spoken word story celebrates humanity.

Thanksgiving story for the troops

Last week I performed for a wonderful group of women in New Jersey. I opened up the floor and asked for stories and I was given this wonderful Thanksgiving story to pass on.

In the mid 1950's someone called a military base and offered to host 10 soliders for Thanksgiving. There was one stipulation--"Make sure not to send any Jews" Thanksgiving arrived and the Host and Hostess hurried to the door when they heard the doorbell chime. There stood 10 black soliders.

"Oh no!" said the confused host,… Continue

Lipstick Writer goes to a HOUSE CONCERT

Saturday night I went to a house concert. OK.......I helped creat the event. The ever wonderful Buck P. Creacy ventured out east to the big city life of......New Jersey! (He even visited the Empire State Bulding-which is not in New Jersey, but then nothing is perfect) I found out that this was Buck's first House Concert. Which got me thinking......(watch out).........And I wondered just how many storytellers know about HOUSE CONCERTS?

What is a HOUSE CONCERT you ask? Well...........it's a conce… Continue

The Lipstick Writer wishes you a L'Shana Tova

I wanted to take a moment, before I go crazy cooking and cleaning and realizing that my house is hopeless, then realizing that I did the best I could and it's good enough, to wish everyone a healthy and happy New Year.

If you haven't guessed from my name, Rivka, I am Jewish. Sunset tonight begins our New Year and ten days of introspection. It's a time when we look at ourselves and the things we've done over the past year. We reconnect with others and try to make right the mistakes we've made.… Continue

Rivka- Nice job on your article in the NSN magazine. Concise, to-the-point and exposing folks to a great idea about yet another venue idea. Thanks for adding the discussion!

Under "things to take into consideration," I would have added that folks need to be aware of local business and tax laws. Depending on who is sponsoring the event and how the monies are handled, licenses and tax forms may need to be completed and applied for. Also, many cities have rules about "business" gatherings taking place in private homes. If one has a grumpy neighbor, issues with civil authorities can come into play.

Great article and I think a good contribution to our art form.

Kind regards,
Sean

I tell mainly ancient and medieval Jewish stories, that's why I asked. Being a Breslover, storytelling is part of our tradition. Many years ago a rabbi said, " I came to teach you Torah and you understand it not , therefore I will tell you stories."

And so we tell stories.

It is truly a very scary thing -- but my friends were quick on the uptake to resurrect me in grand style. All in all, quite painless, just a little time consuming. (I would rather consume treats however.)

I actually asked a former colleague to take pictures at one of my first performances, because I liked to have some for my website - which is still under construction btw - but sadly they were all blurred.

Thank you Rivka for the friendship request. And don't worry about the photograph of me: I'm working on it, to get one, because a profile without feels a bit odd. Only usually I'm the one *taking* the pictures in the house, and finding one of me is easier said than done!

Hi Rivka, Thanks for the info. I have already been on amazon and found Stitching Stars: the Story Quilts of Harriet Powers could it be the book you mention? Some others stories also came up which I'll have fun looking through. Also want to read up on the life of Harriet Powers. Thanks again. Serena x
