I was at an event where Duncan was telling and responded to his invitation for a member of the audience to share a tale. I told one, and Duncan said to me that now I must expect that story to leave me and go where it would, that he would tell it, ...

What a fantastic role for stories. I am currently trying to answer the question around what do stories do in our culture, and I think there is something very powerful in the mutual recognition of humanity, rather than "labels of status" as you put...

Welcome Roisin. It sounds like your doctorate will help you find and answer questions that will also help you professionally. Stories surround people so much that they are like fish not being able to notice the water. Helping them see how fundamental stories are is a good first step to getting to helping people in practical ways.

I have just been trying to capture the essence of storytelling for a magazine article - it is so difficult. Has anyone had a bash at this?

Profile Information

About Me:
I use storytelling in education and business to support learning, communication and conflict resolution, linked with a multi-arts approach. I work with all age groups and have worked on three continents. This year I am also telling at a festival in Israel and running a workshop in Crete.

I have just started a Doctorate in Education at University of Derby UK, looking at the role and function of storytelling in education and adult development. Any links or sources around this topic most welcome.

Turning experience into performanc

Have fully recovered from the Holy Land trip - got my energy, sense of perspective and my humour back. I am now working on a performance, using some of the traditional stories told out there, and linking it with the personal stories I heard, the adventures we had, and my reflections on my own experiences. This will debut at the Multi Faith Centre at my local University on the 30th September, so I am working hard to polish the material and get going on proper rehearsal. This stuff was really big,… Continue

from the Holy Land

Hi All,

we have now finished running workshops with Jewish and Arab groups. First event was a visit to a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank called Tul Karem, where we met Palestinians and heard their experience, followed by a meeting of 50 people (25 from each side) who met in an olive grove to share experiences hosted by Combatents for Peace, a group of ex-warriors from both sides who have decided that the gun won't solve the problems. We met under a canopy and despite three visits from… Continue

Society for Storytelling England and Wales Annual Gathering

Just back from the Annual Gathering in the beautiful Lake District of England. This area is a mix of high peaks and wide waters, it is often wet and dank (hence lots of lakes) but on a Spring day when the sun is shining it is God's Own Country. This weekend the sun shone!
The theme of the gathering was "A Sense of Place", and I was torn between enjoying the wonderful surroudings of outside, and the beautiful house we were staying in and the gems that were to be had in sharing ideas and inspirati… Continue

The places storytelling takes you....

In preparation for an upcoming tour in Israel, working across faiths/cultures, I have been looking into other faiths (I was brought up a non-practising Christian). Today I went to an open day at a Mosque in our city. It was a brilliant experience, people were very welcoming and there was a lot of information on the history and practices of Islam. Whilst I have only got a tiny glimpse of this faith I do feel I understand the links between the Abrahmic faiths more. It is a pity we don't tell more… Continue
