Profile Information

About Me:
Sheila Wee has Scottish parents, an English upbringing and a Chinese surname. She has spent her whole life negotiating across cultures. Sheila has lived in multicultural Singapore since 1983 and is a key leader in the country’s storytelling revival.

Her multicultural repertoire includes Singaporean myths and legends, Asian and Western folktales and lively participation and prop stories. Her style varies from heightened and lyrical, to down to earth and direct, depending on her audience. She regularly tells to audiences of more than a thousand, but particularly enjoys the chance for an intimate gathering of children or adults, where the power of story can truly be revealed.

In 1999 she co-founded Singapore’s first storytelling circle, and in 2001 she went on to co-found Singapore’s first professional storytelling company. In 2006 she became a founding executive committee member of the Storytelling Association (Singapore).

Sheila has taught numerous storytelling skills courses and workshops for adults, both independently and in conjunction with organisations such as the National Book Development Council (Singapore), the Ministry of Education (Singapore) and the Storytelling Association (Singapore). In addition through her work under the Singapore National Arts Council’s Arts Education Programme Sheila has taught storytelling skills to hundreds of primary and secondary school students.

As well teaching storytelling skills, Sheila conducts workshops on the applied use of storytelling. These include workshops on the use of storytelling for:

 language and literacy
 creative writing
 character education
 religious education
 leadership in organisations

As well as her work in Singapore, Sheila has performed in Australia, England and Scotland and has conducted storytelling workshops in Australia, England, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

I believe...

For me stories are at the root of what it is to be human. Our lives are shaped by the stories we hear and tell; in fact life itself is an ever unfolding story.

Science is now telling us that we think in stories; our brain is hardwired that way. This is not surprising, as since the earliest times humanity has educated itself through storytelling. Storytelling has helped us pass on survival skills and values; build strongly bonded families and communities; learn how to live together in peace.

Dear Sheila,
So nice to hear from you. Yes, I think of Singapore often and wonder how I can sing for my supper and return some day. Probably will. Margaret Read MacDonald and I will be working together in a few weeks in Spain. I'll tell her I heard from you.

Hello Sheila, sorry I didn't answer your question. I'm not sure if more European members is due to FEST. I did notice though that there are practically no Scots so word hasn't reached them yet.

How nice to finally communicate with you as a storyteller rather than an editor. Would love to keep in touch with you. --Peggy
