About Me:
Twice Upon a Time Storytellers, Gene and Peggy Helmick-Richardson, draw on myriad folktales, fairy tales, fables and personal stories to entertain as well as address life challenges, relationships and healing with humor and insight. Their programs, for both children and adults, combine tandem along with solo stories.

These Dallas Storytellers have been on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Artists Roster since 2003, and in 2006 they joined the Mid-America Arts Alliance. In 2005, they were selected to perform at the National Storytelling Conference Regional Concert in Oklahoma City. In addition to schools, libraries, festivals, conferences, arts venues, community events, state prisons and a federal penitentiary, they present semimonthly programs at Homeward Bound, a drug and alcohol treatment center, and The Genesis Center, a Dallas shelter for women and children.

With over 25 years of storytelling experience, Gene served on the Tejas Storytelling Association board for four years and was president in 2002. Peggy joined Gene on the professional storytelling stage in 1999. Both have been active volunteers with the Tejas Storytelling Association's Texas Storytelling Festival for a number of years. Gene was site director for 14 years, and over the years, Peggy served in several jobs including publicity director, newsletter editor, and assistant site director. Both currently serve on the board of the Dallas Storytelling Guild; Peggy was president in 2004 and Gene followed in 2007.

Gene has a Ph.D. in entomology (yes, bugs) from North Carolina State University and has 10 years experience in the historical farm museum field (Georgia Agrirama and Homeplace 1850 at The Land Between the Lakes). His expertise in "organic" structural pest control means he is frequently called on for consultations. Peggy has a B.S. in biology from the University of Texas/Arlington and a Master’s Degree in journalism from the University of North Texas. She regularly writes feature cover stories for two North Texas magazines.

Hi Peggy and Gene, This is a good place to keep in touch. It comes with pictures too. Shall we be friends? I did not yet check, but I will need a mailing address for you, long about April, when I hope to have a printed tandem book to send you. Proofs should come soon and I will email that. I was just talking with Connie Pottle about you. She was asking about the book. I remembered she used to live in Texas and was a good friend of Elizabeth. We enjoyed sharing about you. She is anxious to get a book and read your fine article. Happy storytelling. Jonatha

Hi Peggy,

Yes, this is a great way to connect isn't it. Took a look at your website and liked it. You certainly are busy!

I am taking things a little easier workswise this year than I have in the last 10 years and I find myself wondering how I used to manage to get so much done!

Cheers,

Sheila

Thanks so much for your comments re Asian Tales. I do love that part of the world and seem to spend much time either telling there or sharing tales "from there." By the way, if you want a few more ideas for Asian tales, do visit my web site - it has stories and a list of my books. Some of them are published abroad so not so well known here, but useful to those exploring Asia (and of course I have copies ):):). All the best as you keep sharing! Cathy Spagnoli

Hi, Peggy & Gene! We have met several times at the Texas Storytelling Festival in Denton. However, it has been several years since I have been able to attend...it always seems to fall during Holy Week...and I have my church responsibilities to care for during that time. I am hopeful that next year I'll be able to attend again.

I remember the year I was invited to tell in the Tall Tales concert/contest. I was confused with Richard Dockery-Young all weekend. I also have fond memories of getting together with the late Chuck Larkin for impromptu musical jam sessions as well as being invited to Denton resident's homes from time to time for afterglow parties. I look forward to renewing those some of those relationships!
