Wendy, I still haven't been able to sign up to the Utah Guild. We just finished our second annual storytelling festival in Kanab, Oct 24-25. Tom Carter
Great see you there. USG will have a table there where you can get info and sign up. There will also be info on the National Storytelling Network, if you are interested in joining a national organization.
Thanks for getting back so promptly. I'll e mail Sherry Davis. We have an informal guild of about 12 people, depending on how well I bug them and most of them assist around festival time. It's still a problem getting them to see themselves as storytellers, mostly I think they believe they're just helping me organize. But, yeah why not go for a chapter, perhaps that would help them see themselves as part of a tradition. Tom
Hi Wendy, could you tell me how I might become a member of the Utah storytelling guild. I've been unable to access the membership portion of the utah website, Thanks
Congrats on being the USG President. I gave your phone number to the lady now doing the booking at Solitude. Her name is Galas Slingo, she's planning a storytelling day. Email if you need the number for her at idlewild@idlewildrecordings.com
Hi Wendy. Ann Scroggie posted a discussion about the current application process for the Brimstone Award for Applied Storytelling in our Applied Storytelling group. Let me urge you to consider it! Ann is the chair of the NSN Brimstone committee and is really good at answering questions and concerns. She was a great help to me last year when I went through the process! And if I can give you any encourgement or help, let me know! Best wishes to you. STEVE
Nice to meet you, Wendy! I admire your drive and accomplishment. I'm still relatively "new" to the world of storytelling and performing (have been figuring it out for just about ten years now. I find it great that so many in this network have taken storytelling/performing to such large and expansive venues.
Wendy Gourley came to professional storytelling from a background in musical theatre. She was on the teaching staff at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, Utah where she was the founder and co-director of VocalWorks, a musical theatre program for children, grades 2-12. She developed curriculum and helped oversee the education of hundreds of children. She wrote and directed many of the children’s productions, and acted and musically directed for the main stage as well. Wendy was also the music and drama teacher at the Colby School. She had her own vocal studio for years, where she taught singing lessons. She has written and directed many community and school productions. When she found performance storytelling, she felt like she found home. Here was an art form that encompassed all of her loves and she uses them all in her stories: writing, acting, singing, production design, and playing instruments. Wendy feels that storytelling pares theatre down to its purest and most powerful form: story. Through her storytelling, Wendy performs at festival, concerts, schools and conferences. In 2005, She was a featured regional teller at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, the second largest festival in the United States and has performed at other festivals in the Western region. One of her career highlights is when she opened for Michael Feinstein, one of her favorite singers, in 2007. She continues to teach many children through storytelling residencies. She is currently the President-elect of the Utah Storytelling Guild. She is on the membership committee of the National Storytelling Network and writes a column for their Storytelling Magazine. She has produced many storytelling events, including co-chairing the Utah Storytelling Guild’s annual conference and now serves on the Timpanogos Storytelling Conference committee. Wendy is the founder and co-director of Resonance, a non-profit corporation that funds story work with at risk populations. Currently, Resonance Story Theatre is bringing a story-based character education program to Title One schools.
