How the mosquitos were created - a sami fairy tale

This is perhaps more of a legend, than a fairy tale, and there are a couple of varieties of it. This is more or less a translated version of how I use to tell it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the story.…

Lost and Found~ A True Story

We are very fond of our pets and when our little 14 year old terrior wandered out of the yard we were very worried. She is half blind and half deaf and like us -just plain old. She has aches and pains and is stiff when she gets up. Also, she has congestive heart failure and is on meds twice a day.

We were visiting our son in Metairie, LA and she was not familiar with any of her surroundings. She was out of our sight for about 15 minutes when I discovered her missing. We jumped in the…

Bi-lingual storytelling for Mother Tongue week celebrations

This week coming up is Mother Tongue week at my son's school (Australian International in Singapore). I've teamed up with a Japanese parent who conducts MT lessons there to tell The Three Magic Charms, which is a very popular tale (Noriko knew it the moment I suggested it, and has her own book version of it, which was fascinating to see). i'm also working with the Mandarin Dept which has provided three Grade 4 kids who are helping me to tell a story fromn Taiwan…

Valentine's Day, Romance 101, and stuff I wish I hadn't done...

Some years ago, the same year that John Gray published "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus," I had several gigs in the weeks prior to Valentines Day with several "H" card shops giving workshops on "Romance".  They were always full, couples, singles, male and female.  But the next year I couldn't bring myself to pitch the workshop to any of the local card stops.  The folks who attended ran the gambit, eager young couples wanting to get it right, brow beaten men accompanied by wives who…

A Storytelling Funnel

This image of a funnel the kind you might have in the kitchen at canning time, or in the garage with a can of lawn mower gas. It is open and wide on one end for receiving, focused and narrow on the other end to push  through the contents.

I am a funnel for storytelling news and all of us in the business should be. To grow storytelling we need to focus our…

Writing a book, now how do you do that?

I've been working on my first book about storytelling; the working title is "Tricks of the Trade"  with "tricks" meaning "acquired skills".

I've actually written lots of books for private industry.  Training manuals, equipment documents and so forth; but I never "decided" to write a book about storytelling until recently. Like many, I've talked about it, daydreamed about it, and well, just never pulled the trigger. It might seem strange to say but I don't think writing a book about…

Snow Days

Oh I don't mean, get out of school days, no I mean Snow Days!

I mean tracking rabbits through the meadow, snow days.  Watching geese feed near a spring, snow days.  Ice encased branches glistening like diamonds and mountains of jewels in the sun, snow days.  I mean, the crunch of snow beneath your feet across a field that no one but you has wandered though, except for a few deer and a fox and the crows who cleaned up after the fox's picnic.  Bright sunshine on white snow,…
