Thanksgiving story for the troops

Last week I performed for a wonderful group of women in New Jersey. I opened up the floor and asked for stories and I was given this wonderful Thanksgiving story to pass on.

In the mid 1950's someone called a military base and offered to host 10 soliders for Thanksgiving. There was one stipulation--"Make sure not to send any Jews" Thanksgiving arrived and the Host and Hostess hurried to the door when they heard the doorbell chime. There stood 10 black soliders.

"Oh no!"… Continue

Silk, ruby, ebony and clover..

Once upon a long time ago, longer ago than the length of an elephant’s heartbeat, there lived a woman and a child.

The woman always wore silk, red silk – a beautiful gown that clung just so, and as she moved, the whisper of it's message bought joy and happiness to her and to her son.

This child loved his mother deeply, and willingly buried his face every moment he could in the folds of her red silk gown, breathing in her smell and feeling the silky… Continue

Don't look at the Cat!

This is a story I don’t tell on stage, I usually tell this to friends that have met this particular Cat.

Years ago, I had more time on my hands than now days. One of my best friends and I used to go out to coffee every Friday, since we both had that day off for one reason or another. I would arrive around 10:00 am and we’d get some lunch at some place that had good coffee. Every morning as I would come over to pick him up he would open the door and as I came in he would say, “I’m… Continue

Fall Equinox (Yes, two months after the fact)

This was what I posted on the electronic commons: “The last full day of summer is at hand. Tuesday 4:16 Central the eggs can stand on end, the leaves have full permission to turn and depart their branches, the dark comes giddy and soon. Take time to thank your gardens, the beaches and tar, the pop songs that made the summer what it was. Kiss it goodbye. Next year, we'll meet again.”

This was Judy Cooper Lyle response “Do you have to remind us???? I dread winter like the… Continue

Proverbial Paradise

Somewhere between 8 hour days sitting in a chair and my total loss of any spritual attachment I seek a proverbial paradise that eludes even the quickest wit. I see talent everyday, look at all the funny and distorted features that make such a varied plane of humans so wonderful to watch. I love my job, although my toosh does not agree and the hands too. Nothing a little massage can't handle. Not accepting any offers.

My question is, what is this need to have glorified moments… Continue

A Bit More About Me and My Field

Good afternoon, everyone! I don't really know a lot about what it means to be a professional storyteller, but I do know what it means to have a story. I guess the reality is that I'm driven purely by a kind of fascination with what makes us human. I have a sort of unique vantage point on the world--part empirical scientist, part wide-eyed child. And I know that not everyone can see the world in those ways, no matter how hard they try. But I think it is important to find a way to make use of the… Continue

Just did some research at pages. In October, Kansas storyteller Priscilla Howe had the most "hits" of any storyteller on Nearly 400 page views of her page and of those, 198 started on her page. That means, they were looking specifically for what she offers through name, location or content. More tellers should have premium… Continue
