Prometheus & Pandora

According to the Greeks, people were created by two brothers, who were cousins to the gods. Their names were Prometheus & Epimetheus. Epi was the younger of the two and was all excited about making a brand new world and started inventing animals left and right. He had a big pile of wings and claws and fur and such and he just let the creativity flow. Soon, there were birds flying in the air and fish swimming in the ocean and cats prowling in the jungle.

By the time, Prometheus got to… Continue

The Call

I am standing here in a daze, holding my cell phone. Has it really been only two hours since I got the call? I feel lost and uncertain. I admit that I am scared.

Two Hours earlier:

I am sitting at the dining room table, sorting the Wedding invitation list. Michael, my fiance, didn't want to invite his Great Aunt Miriam but I thought it was rude not too. Still, we had a limited amount of space and we both agreed not to have too big of a wedding. I was pondering this when my cell… Continue

Mother

When I was an 8year old boy, I was very close to my mother. One night in late April, 1991, my mother and father had gotten into a pretty bad fight. My mother left the house in our '84 Chevelle.

I didn't see her for 3 days. On the 4th night, she came into my room while I was asleep and woke me up. She said she was sorry that she stayed away for so long. She told me how much she loved me and asked about my day. When my dad woke me up for school the next morning, I asked where mom was. He… Continue

Storytelling in Higher Education: Performance-Lecture

As an academic storyteller (personal term for a teller in higher ed) I have found that the students who hear me as a guest performance-lecturer are seemingly "starved" for stories, i.e, I still have students from several semesters past who approach me on campus to ask when I'm telling again, what classes(s) do I teach [which I can't teach due to my employment classification], where does the local guild meet, etc. etc.

This I have found troubling during my employment here at… Continue

This Christmas Eve - Turn on the Radio, Tuck Yourself Up, and Let Me Tell You a Story

Snuggle down under the duvet this Christmas Eve, with a slurp of cocoa, and have a listen to BBC Radio 3. I have just had the honour of recording a Winter-Themed piece with two musicians; a singer an a percussionist; for the BBC Arts programme Late Junction. The three of us had never met before we came together for one day only to improvise and play a piece for the christmas Eve programme. I had a wonderful time, writing words, words, words, telling, singing and playing a HUGE gong! Have a… Continue

A Child's Quirky Christmas Wisdom

I was playing guitar and singing for a Lions Club Christmas party. Near the beginning of my concert, I preluded Little Drummer Boy by asking the kids what gifts they would have brought baby Jesus.

"Game Boy." "A pony." "Hot Wheels!" Their answers came quickly. They interrupted each other in their excitement. Man, this was great. I was a hit. I reminded myself not to get a swelled head; I was just the warm up for Santa. One girl, about 8 years old, stood a tad apart from the… Continue

Mrs. Thatcher

Cindy Thatcher was 87 years old. She had been a widow for the last 17 of them. She kept Doctors appointment, clipped coupons, and attended Hillside Baptist every Sunday. She was sitting at her worn pine desk, writing her suicide letter. Here is what she wrote:

Dear Friends;

I hope this letter finds you well. I shall be gone by the time you read it. Please don’t be sad or angry at the ending of my life. I assure you, its what I want and what my soul needs now is rest. I am… Continue
