I’m an official Traveling Storyteller.

This week I begin my work as a traveling school assembly presenter. Sure, I’ve been telling in schools for a while now, but that was always in a short distance from my house (an hour or so) or from a family members house. This time I’m going to be traveling, on one trip for over 14 hours by car. This week I will travel from Downey, Idaho to Derby Montana with 4 show at 4 school in 2 days. I’ve packed my bag of stories with everything from Aesop to Poe, from howling coyotes to Abraham Lincoln.… Continue

The Weber State Storytelling Festival, WOW.

I just spent a day in the presents of Greatness. I was lucky enough to tell at the Weber State Storytelling Festival. This festival is a little different then most I have been to. It takes place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and young folks are bused in from elementary and junior high schools from all over the region to hear local, regional, treasured and national storytellers. There is also a Bilingual Voices section. In addition to the kids coming to the storytellers, storytellers are… Continue

Storytelling on Film

What do you think? Can a story translate to film?

I’m trying to see by using the scientific method to find out, but I would like the opinion of storytellers. On professionalstoryteller.ning.com I have three live recordings of myself telling stories. Rachel Hedman told me she likes the story better when she hears it live but can a story still come through on a recording? I have heard Bill Harley perform live and on CD. I liked the performance better when I was there, but I can’t say if the… Continue

Collecting Stories from People: How do you gather the right group.

I want to hear, then tell some good ghost stories. I have been reading ghost story compilations and looking through old news papers, you know all the “Research” stuff. And believe me, there is gold in them pages. I have also been looking through the Urban Legends too and have found some good stuff. But I want what’s being told now, at campfires, slumber parties, office retreats, you know the stories that scare people now.

So to that end, I want to go out and talk to the people and… Continue

That Story is MINE!!!

Last week I checked a book out of the library (title with held) that was full of wonderful stories. Some of the stories I would love to add to my list and put into my own shows. Of course, I like to give credit to the author of a new story, also if I tell a traditional tale like someone else’s version, I gave credit to them. Most of the time, I like to find as many versions of the story as I can and then work it over until it’s mine, them I tell it.

However, in this book, (when I went to… Continue

Why don't we like Ghost Stories any more?

b>b>When I was younger, I loved to hear Ghost Stories, perhaps more than my mother would have liked. And it seemed that there were no ends to find, read, and listen to them. Now it’s all gone. I mean, there are plenty of gory movies and lots of “horror books but where are the stories?

I found this article on Ghostvillage.com and I think that it answers this question, at lest in part.
