Share a Story - Change the World

"If you had just learned that you were about to die, what would be your last words?"

This was the challenge put to us by Jean Harper, a wonderful creative nonfiction writer and English professor at Indiana University-East. The class groaned. It was an impossible assignment. Or was it?

Since my father had died suddenly a couple weeks earlier, without saying any last words to my brothers or me, the assignment took on a new meaning. What would I say to my children if I knew it was my last day? What do I wish my dad had said to me?

Here is my answer*:

It is the end of a story and the beginning of one....

* This originally aired on WVXU-FM, a public radio station out of Cincinnati, as part of NPR's series, "This I Believe."
