"If you had just learned that you were about to die, what would be your last words?"
This was the challenge put to us by Jean Harper, a wonderful creative nonfiction writer and English professor at Indiana University-East. The class groaned. It was an impossible assignment. Or was it?
Since my father had died suddenly a couple weeks earlier, without saying any last words to my brothers or me, the assignment took on a new meaning. What would I say to my children if I knew it was my last day? What do I wish my dad had said to me?
Here is my answer*:
It is the end of a story and the beginning of one....
