A Merry Christmas Gift from the Founder of Professional Storyteller, Dianne de Las Casas - 12-25-08

Friends:

On this joyous day in New Orleans, Louisiana, I wish each and every one of you a Happy Holiday. May 2009 bring you success, peace, love, and new friendships. Here is a gift for you - a story...

Rabbit’s Turnip
A Tale from China
Retold from Dianne de Las Casas
Reprinted from Tangram Tales: Story Theater with the Ancient Chinese Puzzle (Libraries Unlimited 2009)

In the snowy mountains of China, a rabbit stood beneath the gray sky and twitched his nose. More snow was on its way and he needed to find food.

He hopped around and after digging in the ground a while, a turnip turned up. A short while later, a second turnip turned up. Quickly, Rabbit rolled the two turnips home.

Once inside his cozy burrow, he nibbled at one of the turnips. His thoughts turned to his friend, Donkey. “I wonder if Donkey has found enough food. I have enough to eat. I should give her this extra turnip.”

“To my friend’s house I will go
To give her a gift in the midst of the snow.”

Rabbit took the turnip to Donkey’s house and placed it in front of the door. When Donkey returned home with a potato, she found the surprise gift. Her thoughts turned to her friend, Goat. “I wonder if Goat has found enough food. I have enough to eat. I should give him this extra turnip.”

“To my friend’s house I will go
To give him a gift in the midst of the snow.”

Donkey took the turnip to Goat’s house and placed it in front of the door. When Goat returned home with a cabbage, he found the surprise gift. His thoughts turned to his friend, Deer. “I wonder if Deer has found enough food. I have enough to eat. I should give her this extra turnip.”

“To my friend’s house I will go
To give her a gift in the midst of the snow.”

Goat took the turnip to Deer’s house and placed it in front of the door. When Deer returned home with a carrot, she found the surprise gift. Her thoughts turned to her friend, Rabbit. “I wonder if Rabbit has found enough food. I have enough to eat. I should give him this extra turnip.”

“To my friend’s house I will go
To give him a gift in the midst of the snow.”

When Rabbit awoke in the morning, he stepped outside. Imagine his surprise to see a turnip turn up! “Now what friend could have left me such a nice gift?” Because the drifts of snow covered all the tracks, Rabbit had no idea who it was. But Rabbit had an idea.

He hopped around and invited all of his friends over for a big bowl of turnip soup. Rabbit, Donkey, Goat and Deer shared the turnip that turned up.

A gift is definitely a delight to find
But to share it with your friends is truly divine

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all my friends around the world! May your days be merry and bright! And may your gifts be of laughter and light.

Warmly,
