Thanks Dianne. I was inspired to relearn my childhood string games after hearing Anne Pellowski speak in San Diego in 1987. In a curious way, her work gave me "permission" to employ the theatre skills that I had been keeping in the closet. jack & The Beanstalk was created when I was in Eugene, Oregon, developing a story program on "reversals of fortune." I took a long walk along the Willamette River which gave me the rhythm for the rhyme. When i got back to my hotel room, I began to illustrate the rhyme with the string. When I saw the possibility of the Giant's Wife, I realized why she helped Jack hide. That part never made sense to me. Why would she help Jack if "englishmen" were a regular part of their menu? Then I understood: she wasn't going to have jack's arrival spoil her hard work in the kitchen!

OMG David, I just love your Jack and the Beanstalk string story and in rhyme too! You really are a master storyteller! You have to see my string story, The Stubborn Turnip. It's in my Handmade Tales book but of course you know nothing is like seeing a tale live. Keep up the excellence! You set the bar...
