About Me:
Karl has been an active (some say hyper-active) storyteller for over 20 years as a 4th grade teacher, backpacking dad, and very proud Grandpa of a bunch of story-loving grandkiddies. His original children’s stories, tall tales, Mountain Man lore, and folktales from around the world are sure to tickle, tease and please. To quote one of his favorite poets, Shel Silverstein, “Come in, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in.”

I just wanted to thank you again for coming to our literacy night and being such a hit with the kids and parents. It will long be remembered. It really was nice to have such a great storyteller amongst us and the kids are still talking about it. I hope that next year you will consider joining us again.

Jenny

Dear Karl:
Last Thursday you were a storyteller at our school. I wanted to say thank you for going above and beyond that evening and giving of your talent and time. I understand you stayed longer than planned to begin with. [We] missed getting into your last storytelling of the evening. At the end of the session we stepped in and asked what your favorite story to tell was. You answered about how the skunk got it's stripes. When I asked for the minute summary, you kindly told that whole story, even with bits of storyteller flair, and entranced myself, my son, and two girls. Thank you so for going the extra mile, for the private story, and being so gentle and understanding with the kids; it finished our evening off wonderfully and made a lasting impression.

Martha

Karl,
Do my eyes & ever-rusty memory deceive me or did we get a chance to meet in Gatlinburg at the NSN conference & I blew it?!?

I know I was extremely distracted from roughly 5p.m. Saturday on as there was a family emergency, but I suspect with a bit of help I should be saying "OH, OF COURSE!!! Now I remember."

Hi Karl,
Thanks for referring me to Merilee Stowell in Parowan for their "Inspirational Night" entertainment. My husband's going to go with me and they're putting us up at Brian Head for the night.
I've really enjoyed getting to know you and telling with you at Frontier Fest and the Utah Storytelling Showcase that Rachel Hedman so expertly put together. Hope to tell with again, Suzanne

sorry Karl, I have been off the mat for a while. You can search PS for "Fifty Ways to use this storyteller" or go to my webpage and it is there or you can go to Sean Buvala's website and it is there.

I would encourage you to look into your state's "Festival Association" each county or community has a festival and there is usually a statewide "association" for people who are interested in those events, vendors, talent, etc. Jump in and get to work.
Hope that helps
Buck

Hi Karl
I haven't been able to play any of the brass instruments, I can't seem to do the embouchure for them. I do have an Alto Cortol and a Glastonbury Pipe, both double reed straightened versions of the Crumhorn. Catch ya next time.

Hey Karl,
To my new friend . . . I had a lot of fun storytelling with you at Frontier Fest. I never got tired of hearing the bear story. You're an awesome mountain man. I hope we get to tell together again sometime soon! Suzanne

Karl, I have been a professional storyteller since 1993 doing shows locally and developing my talent in order to step into it in my retirement. About a year and half ago I develop a web page www.garywittmann.com and have been using word of mouth and brochures to get my name out there. I also call the local newspaper or television show to let them know I am going to be in there area. You have to be your own PR man and get it out there. I am a member of a storytelling group which has help me develop my skills. I am working on books and cd material right now since I have more time to expand. This is another way of marketing yourself but expanding the business end of the storytelling. I have two shows coming up in June since I didn't get the material out in January to the Library for booking purpose. I hope this answer some of your questions about transitioning from teaching to retirement. Or should I say semi retirement.
