Earth Hour/Lights Out

On Saturday, March 29th 2008, the lights went out. Not in a bad way, but deliberately, people turned off at least some of their lights, at least some of their gadgets, just to see what would happen. Even the Google website changed on that day, turning dark to celebrate the event. In some places, there were events to get people out of the house, to keep them from electrical temptations. In our community, at least, this event was perfect for storytelling. The weather was cool but not uncomfortabl… Continue

Telling Stories "outside the box"

One of the things that I like to do is to tell stories to people in unusual settings. I have realized that many people have forgotten that stories aren't just for children. Worse, they think of storytelling as something that only occurs in a library or a school. So, whenever possible, I bring storytelling to other settings...museums, parks, even a cemetery [I told the stories of some of the Civil War veterans buried there, and got a very good response from visitors at an event that was otherwise… Continue

Yes, the Folk Alliance Region West [FAR-West] conference this year should be a good one. Even though it is aimed primarily at musicians, rather than storytellers, there are a lot of practical workshops, and a lot of networking opportunities. Folk Alliance, in theory, covers music, dance and storytelling. In practice, not enough storytellers have joined it. I have found it to be more businesslike than NSN, and wish the two organizations would cooperate more. The Folk Alliance national headquarters is in Tennessee, in Memphis.

Hello Nick,

Hope everything is well with you.

This is a very interesting site. I am sorry there won't be a Summer Solstice Festival this year, but we are thinking of checking out the Folk Alliance Conference in Phoenix this year.

Will you be there?

Johanna

Great story... er.. a.. reality. What is the Library's name and what city is it in? This is a great and wide spread type of story. Each has common characteristics, but each has story... er.. Ghost has their own unique charms. Do you have a Photo of Nellie Russ (either in life after) and a photo of the library? My I see them?
Isn’t this fun?

Dear Nick:

Welcome to the site.

Do you have a particular culture or country that fascinates you more so than the others with their stories? What is one of your current storytelling projects?

I noticed that your website has a picture of you. Are you able to copy/upload it to this place so people can remember you better?

Until we tell again,

Rachel Hedman

Hey, Nick, Welcome!

You will find this a most remarkable site - one that will surprise, delight, inform and challenge you.

A growing collection of excellent storytellers, some old pros, some newbies, but all with the passion that most of us share.

As both a teller and a librarian (correct?), you will have much to share with us, and I look forward to your input.

Do you work mostly with the younger children (grades 1-6), or the older kids? If you work w/ both, which do you find more rewarding, and/or more challenging?

Anyway, we're happy that you have joined us, and, again, Welcome!

Sincerely,

Tom
